Nallanchu Thella Cheera (Black bordered White Saree)

A pleasant weekend, lots of junk to eat and  a novel...life can be such a bliss. Well, I finished reading(actually, re-reading) "Nallanchu thella cheera" by Yandamuri Veerendranath.

The author needs little introduction - apart from being a famous writer, he also is a personality development trainer and a film director. His latest work was a weekly series in 'funday' of Saakshi news paper - "dega rekkala chappudu". Many of his works have been translated into other languages - tamil, malayalam, english, hindi and a few have been made into movies, of which, i could immediately recall - 'vennello aadapilla'(starring Srikanth) and 'aakari poratam'(Nagarjuna, Sridevi & Suhasini).

Now, a little about my love of literature - a generation before me(my mom's, aunt's) grew up with waiting for Yandamuri's next work, Yaddanpudi's Sulochana rani's next novel. Unfortunately, with my generation the waiting translated into waiting for the next episode of daily serials. The first one I remember clearly is "Ruturagalu" - every evening at 4:30 pm. Well, fortunately for me(and to my mom's horror), one day, I happened to stumble upon a treasure chest - of dear old telugu novels of my aunt, which she had left at her parents' place before she left for her in-laws' home. There began my love of literature.

I luckily had a chance to read some of those novels again(DC plus plus - I love u so much!!!!). So, here comes the story.

The novel was written as a serial for a daily newspaper. And the story is explained from the hero's point of view. Though the author feels there are no heroes in the book - I beg to differ. He might not be a good husband(yes, this is not a novel where the hero falls in love and  marries his love of life in the climax - he happened to marry his cousin, early into the novel), but he definitely is a hero. Which girl, atleast of the previous generation, does not want a boyfriend like Ravi Teja. He has a great talent - of what makes a girl or a woman look beautiful, which saree suits which body personality, and how to sell. So, from a door-to-door sales boy, our hero becomes an executive of Ravi Teja textiles(not his own company). But, his personal life is not so successful. There is a huge communication gap between his wife and him. He is not at all a husband, Madhavi wants. Despite these, Ravi improves the situation of the company to a great deal, solving many problems.

Then, arrives the letter - from a girl who observed Ravi's progress all these years, helping in her own way, asking for Ravi's meeting. Deeply moved, that there is indeed a woman who has recognized his efforts, Ravi faces a great disappointment when she does not show up for the meeting.

With disappointment, frustration over his personal life, Ravi starts responding to his young and beautiful personal secretary - Priyamvadha. Meanwhile, a person starts trying to grab the attention of his wife. Then, Ravi does a great mistake - of spending two days alone with Priyamvada in a hotel. On the third day, he is in for a great shock - shock of his life time. He loses everything, becomes a 'wanted' person, is set to escape from the country on new year's day. How did he get saved? By whom? Who was the mastermind behind the downfall of Ravi?

In a time - when u get to know the story of a newly released movie, the next day itself,  I am one, who believes twists of story should be kept a secret for the reader or for the viewer. Make the story interesting but do not reveal the entire plot. I hope I have done my job in making the story interesting. There it is...my first review about a novel i like from an author I love....And, by the way, the novel has been made into a movie, but with many differences from the book. The author himself says that there is no relation between the movie and the book except for the characters.
